This month, the stage at Tuscola High School will transform into an underwater world as students present Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
But this isn’t just a school play.
It’s one of the most meaningful ways our community can show up for the next generation.
Based on the beloved Disney story, The Little Mermaid follows Ariel, a young mermaid who dreams of life beyond the ocean. Along the way, audiences will recognize iconic songs like “Under the Sea,” “Part of Your World,” and “Kiss the Girl.”
But what’s happening behind the curtain may be even more important than what’s happening on stage.
Why Supporting High School Theater Matters
High school theater is more than entertainment—it’s formation.
It’s where students:
-
Find confidence they didn’t know they had
-
Learn teamwork under real pressure
-
Discover creative gifts that shape their future
-
Experience the joy of being part of something bigger than themselves
And it’s not just the cast.
Students are running lights, managing sound, building sets, organizing costumes, and solving problems in real time. These are real skills being developed right here in Haywood County.
For many students, this stage becomes a place where they feel seen—and that matters.
A Small Ticket, A Big Impact
When you show up, you’re doing more than watching a performance.
You’re:
-
Encouraging a student who’s nervous before stepping on stage
-
Affirming months of late nights and hard work
-
Supporting arts programs that depend on community backing
-
Helping ensure opportunities like this continue
In a world of streaming and scrolling, this is something different.
It’s live.
It’s local.
And it matters.

Make It a Night That Matters
You don’t have to have a student involved to be part of this.
Bring your family. Invite a friend. Stay after and tell a student they did a great job.
It might mean more than you realize.
The Holler Take
We talk a lot about supporting local businesses—and we should.
But supporting local students?
That might matter even more.
