Celebrating waynesville history and showcasing public art waynesville |
Waynesville's rich tapestry of history is set to be vividly portrayed through a new mural in the heart of downtown. Durham-based artist Max Dowdle has been selected to bring this vision to life, with the artwork slated for 121 N. Main St.
The mural will encapsulate pivotal moments from Waynesville's past, including the original Gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains. George Kenney, chair of the Waynesville Public Art Commission, highlighted that the piece will feature scenes from World War I, the late 1800s, and the inauguration of the Gateway. This initiative aims to honor Waynesville's heritage and connect residents and visitors to its storied past.
Community involvement is a cornerstone of this project. As the mural nears completion, residents will have opportunities to participate in its creation. A dedication ceremony is planned for late May, celebrating the collaborative effort and the town's commitment to public art.
The Waynesville Public Art Commission, established in 2006, continues to enrich public spaces through original art that reflects the town's unique cultural and historical resources. This mural is the latest addition to the Waynesville Public Art Trail, a self-guided tour showcasing the town's artistic spirit.
For those interested in contributing to this project, whether through volunteering or donations, information is available through the Waynesville Public Art Commission. This endeavor not only beautifies the town but also strengthens community bonds by celebrating shared history and creativity. |
