Quote Of The Day

"Stay close to anything that makes you glad you are alive."

On February 11, 2026, Canton, North Carolina, saw a huge community turnout as locals rallied against proposed data centers and cryptocurrency mining operations.

The temporary town hall overflowed with voices worried about potential environmental damage, utility strain, and threats to Canton's identity.

After hours of passionate testimony, the board unanimously passed a 12-month moratorium on new data centers and crypto mines.

Mayor Zeb Smathers warned of their unpredictable and disruptive risks, stressing the responsibility to protect future generations.

With memories of recent floods and the paper mill closure still fresh, Canton residents united to defend their town’s future.

During the pause, officials led by Town Manager Lisa Stinnett will create new land-use rules, aiming for smart protections.

This move aligns Canton with neighboring towns that have already set strict limits on digital infrastructure, reflecting strong local concern for careful, sustainable growth.

Waynesville’s vibrant history will soon come alive in a stunning new mural in the center of downtown. Noted Durham artist Max Dowdle has been chosen to create this mural at 121 N. Main St.

The artwork will capture iconic moments from Waynesville’s past, highlighting scenes such as the original Gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains, World War I, and life in the late 1800s.

By weaving together these historic touchstones, the mural aims to forge a deeper bond between the town’s heritage and its modern community.

Local involvement is central to this endeavor. Residents will be invited to help with the final touches before a dedication ceremony planned for late May.

This initiative adds to the Waynesville Public Art Trail, illustrating the town’s creative spirit while inviting donations and volunteers to support the project. The mural will not only beautify downtown but also strengthen community pride and connection.
