Haywood Habitat for Humanity is set to enhance the Chestnut Park neighborhood in Waynesville with a significant new project.

The organization has been awarded a substantial grant to develop outdoor community spaces, including a nature walking path and a play area.

These additions aim to foster connections between Chestnut Park residents and the broader community, providing shared spaces for walking, gathering, and recreation.

For over 35 years, Haywood Habitat for Humanity has been dedicated to assisting families in achieving homeownership through volunteer-built homes and long-term affordability programs.

Their mission extends beyond housing, focusing on creating environments that promote community engagement and well-being.

"This project reflects what's possible when a community comes together around shared values," said the executive director of Haywood Habitat for Humanity.

"The Chestnut Park civic space will be a true community asset—a place for connection, gathering, love, and shared experience."

Local employees from the grant-awarding organization are expected to volunteer alongside Habitat crews, contributing to the planting of native trees, shrubs, and flowers, as well as the construction of the walking path and play area.

"We are honored to partner with Haywood Habitat for Humanity to support the revitalization of Chestnut Park," said the general manager of the partnering organization.

"This project will help create a safer, greener, and more vibrant community space."

Haywood Habitat leaders believe these improvements will strengthen both the neighborhood and the wider community by encouraging outdoor activity, connection, and accessibility for families.

In addition to this project, Haywood Habitat for Humanity continues to address the affordable housing crisis in the region.

Recently, they reopened applications for two new homes in the Jonathan Creek subdivision, specifically for families impacted by Hurricane Helene in 2024.

These small-footprint houses are part of the organization's ongoing efforts to provide stable housing solutions for those in need.

Furthermore, the Smoky Mountain Housing Partnership, a division of Mountain Projects, is actively working to expand affordable housing opportunities across Western North Carolina.

They have embarked on an ambitious drive to build affordable homes throughout the region, including micro-homes and family dwellings.

These initiatives underscore a collective commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents in Haywood County through affordable housing and community development.

By integrating green spaces and fostering community connections, organizations like Haywood Habitat for Humanity and the Smoky Mountain Housing Partnership are making significant strides toward building stronger, more resilient communities.
