Haywood County to Launch Innovative Middle School in 2026

New Program Aims to Accelerate Learning for Middle Schoolers

Haywood County is set to introduce an innovative educational program with the launch of Haywood Innovative, an accelerated middle school experience, in August 2026.

This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Haywood County school district, Haywood Community College, and county officials, aiming to provide a unique learning environment for students in Waynesville and surrounding areas.

Haywood Innovative will mirror the successful model of Haywood Early College (HEC), offering middle school students an advanced curriculum that integrates high school courses and early exposure to college-level classes.

Lori Fox, principal of HEC and the 2021 North Carolina Principal of the Year, will lead the new school.

She emphasizes the program's goal to prepare students to be thinkers, designers, and communicators on the world stage.

The school will be housed in the Dogwood Building of Haywood Community College, with renovations currently underway to accommodate the new student body.

Plans include hiring an assistant principal and seven teachers to support an anticipated enrollment of up to 120 students, with 40 students per grade level.

Superintendent Trevor Putnam highlighted the district's commitment to providing diverse educational options within the public school system, aiming to attract students seeking an accelerated curriculum.

Haywood Innovative aligns with North Carolina's attainment goals and the national Go Jobs Initiative, positioning itself as a potential model for educational innovation both statewide and nationally.

Community members interested in learning more about Haywood Innovative are invited to an informational session on February 19 at 5:30 PM in the Haywood Community College Auditorium.

This event will provide an opportunity to meet the leadership team and gain insights into what makes this program distinctive.

For updates and information, families can text @applyhi to 81010.

Student application details will be available soon.

Haywood County's commitment to educational excellence continues to drive initiatives like Haywood Innovative, aiming to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in an ever-evolving world.
